Peru: Blockades in Machu Picchu region November 17

Tensions are high in the Machu Picchu area following a recent court decision regarding buses allowed to operate on the Hiram Bingham route, which connects the village of Machu Picchu to the archeological site. Protesters are threatening to block the road as well as the Perú Rail line leading to the site on Friday, November 17.

Context

Marches and nighttime sit-ins have been regularly held over the issue since October. Residents are worried the decision will have an impact on the local economy, heavily dependent on the world-famous Machu Picchu ruins.
