Uruguay: Trade unions to hold rally in Montevideo on November 16

The PIT-CNT trade union group will hold a rally against imperialism and neoliberalism in Montevideo on November 16

Warning

Event

The Intersyndical Plenary of Workers - National Convention of Workers (PIT-CNT) trade union group has called for a rally and partial work stoppages in Montevideo on Thursday, November 16, against imperialism and neoliberalism in Latin America. The rally will take place at Universidad de la República from 09:00 until 13:00 (local time), after which protesters will march to the Obelisk. Reports say the event will be headlined by former president of Brazil Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Localized traffic disruptions are likely in the area of the march, as well as an increased security presence. While the march is expected to remain peaceful, clashes between protesters and security personnel cannot be ruled out.

Context

PIT-CNT held a similar rally in front of the US Embassy in Montevideo on October 4, which remained largely peaceful.

Advice

Individuals present in Uruguay, particularly in Montevideo, are advised to avoid all demonstrations as a precaution and to be prepared for possible transportation disruptions.
