French President Macron to arrive in Algiers for official visit December 6; anticipate increased security measures and traffic disruptions

Warning

Event

French President Emmanuel Macron will arrive in the capital Algiers for an official one-day visit on Wednesday, December 6. Macron is set to meet with President Bouteflika and Prime Minister Ahmed Ouyahia. Increased security measures and traffic disruptions are to be expected in the capital throughout the day.

Context

President Macron began a tour of African states on November 28. He has already visited Burkina Faso, Côte d'Ivoire, and Ghana.

Advice

Individuals in Algiers are advised to anticipate transportation disruptions (including road closures and increased congestion surrounding the visit), to cooperate with local authorities, and to avoid any potential demonstrations due to risk of violence.

On a separate note, due to the risk of terrorism throughout the country, individuals present in Algeria are advised to maintain a high degree of vigilance, to report any suspicious objects or behavior to the relevant authorities, and to be particularly cautious when visiting sites deemed particularly likely to be targeted in an attack (public transportation, train stations, ports, airports, public or government buildings, embassies or consulates, international organizations, schools and universities, religious sites, markets, hotels, and restaurants frequented by foreigners/Westerners, festivals, etc.).
