Algeria: Teacher strike and protest in Kabylie Dec.19

On Tuesday, December 19, thousands of professors demonstrated against the region’s Education Directorate in Tizi Ouzou in what they called a “dignity march.” Demonstrators gathered in front of the directorate office in the morning (local time) before walking towards the Wilayah building (regional administration). The demonstration ended in a sit-in in front of the Wilayah. An associated teacher strike, launched on November 19, continues.

Context

Professors affiliated with the Cnapeste union launched their strike following an assault carried out against a colleague and the lack of response from the region’s Education Directorate. Protestors have called for the resignation of those involved in the assault, including two employees of Education Directorate. They also denounced attempts by the education director to intimidate the professors taking part in the movement.

The situation seems to be at an impasse, with the regional education office refusing to address the Cnapeste’s demands.
