Germany: Storm Zubin brings high winds, transportation disruptions Dec. 14

Event

Storm Zubin brought rain, snow, high winds, and consequent traffic disruptions to parts of southern Germany in the early morning of Thursday, December 14. At least eight people have been injured by the storm. Winds of over 100 km/h (62 mph) were reported in Munich, with locally higher wind gusts in towns across southern Germany, including 122 km/h (75 mph) gusts in Waibstadt (Baden-Württemberg state). All S-Bahn trains were delayed in the Munich and Stuttgart areas due to fallen trees on overhead lines on Thursday morning. Numerous traffic accidents were reported in the Black Forest region, which faced high winds and blowing snowfall, and in Starnberg, Fürstenfeldbruck, and Dachau districts (Bavaria state). A crane collapse in Germering caused traffic disruptions on Market Street and material damages. Flight disruptions were also reported at Munich Airport (MUC) on December 14. Additional stormy weather is expected across much of southern Germany through Friday, December 15, which may cause additional transportation disruptions. 

Context

Storm Zubin has also brought severe weather to parts of northern and central Switzerland, leaving at least one person dead in Riehen as of December 14.
