The Ghanaian Ministry of Health announced on Thursday, December 7, that an outbreak of H1N1 influenza is ongoing in Kumasi (Ashanti region), after four suspected associated deaths were reported. At least 44 students at the Kumasi Academy high school have been hospitalized since Sunday, December 3, amid the outbreak; at least 12 cases have tested positive for the H1N1 virus. As of Friday, December 8, the Kumasi Academy high school is closed until further notice. Other students throughout the surrounding area will remain in school. Further spread of the H1N1 flu is possible in Kumasi in the coming weeks.

Context

H1N1 influenza is an acute respiratory infection of varying severity, ranging from asymptomatic infection to fatal disease. Typical influenza symptoms include fever with abrupt onset, chills, sore throat, non-productive cough, which is often accompanied by headache, coryza, myalgia, and prostration.
