Mexico: Increased crime risk during holiday period

Event

As is typically the case, rates of theft (including violent muggings) and road accidents are expected to rise in Mexico during the Christmas and New Year season. This risk is particularly high in the capital and other large cities. An increased security presence is likely nationwide in the coming days. 

Context

Mexico has seen a spike in crime and violence in 2017. According to official statistics published by the National Public Security System (SNSP), violent robberies increased from 26,494 in all of 2016 to at least 34,108 in the first ten months of 2017. Cases of highway robbery also increased from 2016, including a significant rise in robberies targeting private vehicles and buses. Additionally, 2794 homicides were recorded in October, the highest number in 20 years. Kidnappings have also increased in recent months, particularly in Veracruz, Estado de México, and Mexico City.

Advice

Individuals present in Mexico are advised to remain vigilant, only keep small amounts of cash on hand, and remain vigilant when driving. Keep in mind that criminals may be armed; do not resist if confronted and do not look your attacker(s) directly in the eye.
