Venezuela: Power outages in greater Caracas area Dec. 18

Blackouts ongoing in parts of Caracas, Vargas, and Miranda December 18; transportation disruptions reported

Parts of the capital city of Caracas as well as the states of Miranda and Vargas are experiencing power outages on Monday, December 18. According to media reports, the Los Cortijos, Los Dos Caminos, Boleita, Chacao, and Plaza Venezuela areas of the capital are without power. Sections of the Caracas Metro, including lines 1-3, are not operating due to the outages. The "Simon Bolivar" International Airport of Maiquetia (CCS) near Caracas has also reportedly been affected. Expect associated transportation disruptions in the abovementioned areas.

Context

According to local media, the blackouts started at approximately 12:00 (local time) on Monday. Corpoelec, the state-run electricity company, announced that it is working to restore power. Officials have not confirmed the cause of the outages or how many homes are being affected.
