Authorities launch military operation in Tumaco (Nariño department) to address drug trafficking and insecurity January 8

The Colombian military launched a large operation in the city of Tumaco (Nariño department) on Monday, January 8. At least 2000 troops have been deployed to the city as part of the “Exodus 2018” operation to combat drug trafficking and other criminal activity. Additional operations will also reportedly take place in the Nariño municipalities of El Charco, Franciso Pizzaro, La Tola, Magüí Payán, Mosquera, Olaya Herrera, Roberto Payán, Santa Barbara, and Barcaboas.
Context
Armed conflict continues in Nariño and across the country between security forces, ELN members, ex-FARC dissidents, and organized crime groups. Paramilitary crime organizations (BACRIM) such as the Clan del Golfo have replaced leftist guerrillas as the most serious armed threat in Colombia today. These groups, involved in a rage of illicit activities including drug trafficking and illegal mining, have moved into the region to claim territory left by the demobilized FARC group, leading to violent turf wars as well as assassinations of local landowners and community leaders.

Individuals in Tumaco and Nariño department more generally are advised to remain vigilant, report any suspicious behavior to relevant authorities, and adhere to any instructions issued by the local authorities.
Due to the presence of a number of armed groups, some Western governments advise against travel to various parts of the country, including Tumaco and other parts of Nariño.
