Cyprus: Presidential election held Jan. 28

Cypriots vote in presidential poll January 28

Informational

Event

Greek Cypriots are heading to the polls to vote for a new president on Sunday, January 28. Polling stations opened at 07:00 (local time) and close at 18:00; results are expected by 20:30. The election has so far been held without incident. If no candidate wins more than 50 percent of the vote (as is expected) then a runoff will be held on Sunday, February 4.

Context

Nine candidates, including incumbent President Nicos Anastasiades (Democratic Rally party), are seeking to win a five-year presidential term. Anastasiades is expected to secure a place in the runoff next week. Opinion polls suggest that the second place in the runoff will be won by either Stavros Malas (independent candidate, backed by AKEL party) or Kocolas Papadopolous (Democratic Party).

Advice

Individuals in Cyprus are advised to monitor the situation and avoid any public gatherings.
