India: Goa taxi unions plan strike on January 19

Taxi unions in Goa plan statewide strike for January 19; airport taxis to maintain service

Warning

Event

The North and South Goa Tourist and Taxi Owners Associations will hold a general strike on Friday, January 19, throughout the state from 08:00 to 18:00 (local time). All taxis will be removed from service for the duration of the strike, with the exception of airport taxis; the airport taxi union announced its opposition to the strike, claiming it would unduly affect travelers. Authorities have deemed the strike illegal, and plan to deploy an additional 1000 buses to compensate for the disruption. Associated protests are possible, particularly at major transport hubs and government associations.

Context

Approximately 18,000 taxis are registered in Goa. The taxi associations claim the strike is in opposition to a requirement to install speed governors, a device to limit speed, as well as reported harassment of taxi drivers by authorities.

Advice

Travelers within Goa are advised to seek alternative means of transportation and allow for extra time to reach their destinations. Furthermore, individuals are advised to avoid public demonstrations and gatherings as a precaution, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities.
