India: Goa taxi unions to continue strike January 20 /update 1

The North and South Goa Tourist and Taxi Owners Associations launched a statewide strike on Friday, January 19, and will reportedly continue through at least Saturday, January 20. All taxis will remain out of service for the duration of the strike; airport taxis reportedly joined the strike despite previously rejecting calls to do so. Authorities have deemed the strike illegal, and have threatened to revoke the licenses of participating drivers. Furthermore, officials have announced that they may invite additional ridesharing app drivers such as those with Uber and Ola to operate in the state if the strike does not end by Saturday. Associated peaceful protests took place on Friday in the state capital of Panaji. Further protests are possible, particularly at major transport hubs and government associations.

Context

Approximately 18,000 taxis are registered in Goa. The taxi associations claim the strike is in opposition to a requirement to install speed governors, a device to limit speed, as well as reported harassment of taxi drivers by authorities.
