Armed clashes broke out between suspected land traffickers and locals in Perené district (Chancamayo province, Junín region) on the morning of Tuesday, January 2. At least three people were injured in the fighting and several homes were reportedly set fire to by the traffickers. National Police agents have since been deployed to the area and have arrested 15 people.

Context

Land trafficking is the illegal usurpation of public or privately-owned land - for example to use for farming, mining, or timber - and can lead to violent disputes, particularly in rural areas.
