Peru: Threats made against papal visit /update 1

Pope Francis to visit Lima, Puerto Maldonado, and Trujillo January 18-21; increased security measures due to attack threats

Warning

Event

The Peruvian police announced that threats have been made to attack Pope Francis and crowds gathered to see him during his visit to Trujillo on Saturday, January 20. As such, security measures will be tighter than initially expected; more than 5000 agents will be deployed to protect related events as well as churches throughout the city. Strict security measures are also to be anticipated at his other scheduled appearances in the capital Lima and Puerto Maldonado.

Additionally, January 19 has been declared a public holiday in Puerto Maldonado and January 20 in Trujillo. As such, business and store closures as well as reduced public transit services are possible. Other disruptions due to large crowds, congestion surrounding papal events, and temporary road closures should be expected. A large influx of visitors will arrive in the three cities before and during the pope's trip, which could cause delays and congestion at local airports and other transportation hubs.

Context

Pope Francis is scheduled to visit Lima, Puerto Maldonado (Madre de Dios region), and Trujillo (La Libertad region) from January 18 through January 21. The pope will arrive in Lima around 17:00 (local time) on January 18 and depart for Puerto Maldonado at 10:00 the following day. On Saturday he will be in Trujillo before flying back to Rome on Sunday at 19:00.

Advice

Individuals in Peru should anticipate transportation disruptions during the pope's visit and adhere to all instructions issued by security personnel.
