Sweden: Grenade attack on Malmö police station Jan. 17

A grenade exploded near a police station in the Rosengård area of Malmö, Skåne county, around 21:00 (local time) on Wednesday, January 17. Authorities have not yet identified the assailant, or a motive for the attack. Furthermore, no injuries were reported, but several vehicles were damaged. An investigation into the incident is ongoing. Expect an increased security presence in the area as well as associated transportation disruptions.

Context

In October 2017, Swedish officials committed to increasing protection for police officers in the wake of multiple attacks targeting security personnel. Recent incidents include an attempted murder of a police officer in Västerås (Västmanland county) and attacks on police stations in Helsingborg (Skåne county), Uppsala (Uppsala county), and Växjö (Kronoberg county).
