Colombia: High air pollution levels in Medellín Feb. 22

High levels of air pollution reported in Medellín February 22; limit outdoor activities

Warning

Event

High levels of air pollution are being recorded in Medellín - Colombia’s second largest city and capital of Antioquia department - as of early Thursday, February 22 (local time). Air Quality Index (AQI) readings have surpassed the “unhealthy” threshold (150) in several parts of the city.

This air pollution could be hazardous to the health of people in the city, notably vulnerable groups such as children, seniors, pregnant women, and people suffering from asthma and other respiratory issues. Air pollution can also be harmful to heart health and could contribute to factors that provoke heart attack or stroke.

Advice

Individuals present in Medellín are advised to limit outdoor activities, notably strenuous activity, until pollution rates fall.
