Far-right protest against refugees planned in Cottbus February 3; police arrest six far-right supporters on February 1 ahead of the demonstration

The far-right National Democratic Party (NDP), along with other far-right groups, are planning to hold an anti-refugee demonstration in Cottbus, Brandenburg state, on Saturday, February 3. On Thursday, February 1, police officials said that six NDP members were arrested in the city for handing out flyers and tear gas ahead of the protest. According to the authorities, additional police officers will be deployed into Cottbus on Saturday to maintain order. A counter-demonstration by refugees and far-left groups are also being organized to take place during the NDP event. Heightened security measures and localized traffic disruptions are anticipated in Cottbus on February 3. Clashes between rival protest groups and security forces cannot be ruled out.
Context
Tensions have been high in Cottbus recently between local residents and refugees. Around 3400 refugees live the city, which has a total population of about 100,000. The anti-immigrant Alternative for Germany (AfD) party came in first in Cottbus during the 2017 legislative elections. In January 2018, there were two incidents involving Syrian refugees assaulting German citizens with knives in the city, further increasing tensions.
