Lebanon: February 15 transportation strike called off /update 1

Event

A four-hour national strike by taxi, private bus, and truck drivers initially planned for Thursday, February 15, has been suspended following a promising meeting with the Ministry of the Interior. The union behind the strike, however, has warned that a new strike could be called for if another meeting set for February 16 does not prove productive. 

Context

The strike had been called for by the Federation of Land Transport Unions to protest unfair competition by ride share companies Uber and Careem, a recent increase in fares, and the privatization of inspection and vehicle registration centers.
