Mexico: Increase in luggage theft from Mexico City International Airport

Mexico City officials warn of increased complaints of luggage theft at Mexico City International Airport (MEX); take necessary precautions

Informational

Event

The Mexico City Consejo Ciudadano (Citizen’s Council) reported 60 complaints of theft of personal belongings at Mexico City International Airport (MEX) in 2017, a 25 percent increase from 2016. Many of the thefts were allegedly committed by employees of private security companies who had been hired by airlines to inspect passengers’ bags after check-in. Items stolen included travelers’ jewelry, cash, and bank cards.

Context

Mexico experienced a spike in crime and violence in 2017. According to official statistics published by the National Public Security System (SNSP), violent robberies increased from 26,494 in all of 2016 to at least 34,108 in the first ten months of 2017. Cases of highway robbery also increased from 2016, including a significant rise in robberies targeting private vehicles and buses.

Advice

Travelers flying to and from MEX are advised to closely monitor belongings and keep valuables in carry-on baggage. Individuals flying Iberia, VivaAerobus, or Volaris should be particularly careful as these carriers have had the most complaints brought against them.
