Mexico: Increased rates of violent car thefts

Rates of car theft are increasing in Mexico, according to the Mexican National Public Security System (SESNSP). In 2017, 186,896 vehicle thefts were reported nationwide, including 63,179 violent car thefts. This represents a 15 percent increase over the same period in 2016 in all car thefts, and a 40 percent increase in violent car thefts.

Individuals present in Mexico are advised to remain vigilant at all times due to high crime rates, maintain a low profile (conceal signs of wealth to avoid attracting the attention of would-be thieves), and report suspicious behavior to relevant authorities. Do not attempt to resist would-be attackers or thieves; report attacks or robberies to the police.
