Nicaragua: Low-intensity earthquakes in Managua region

Event

A number of low-intensity earthquakes (under 3 on the Richter scale) have been reported in the country, including the Managua area, since February 9 and more are expected in the coming days. A total of seven perceptible tremors occurred between February 9 and midday February 12 (local time), with another nine recorded by instruments. While further shaking is expected, there is currently no indication that a powerful earthquake is likely.

Context

Nicaragua is located in an active seismic area and earthquakes as well as volcanic activity are relatively common. A major earthquake, measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale, devastated the capital Managua in 1972, killing thousands.

Advice

In the event of an earthquake, take shelter under a table or crouched in a corner (away from exterior walls and windows) if indoors and protect your head with your arms. If outdoors, move away from buildings and other tall structures. Do not attempt to evacuate a building during an earthquake unless on the ground floor near an exit. After a major earthquake, check buildings for structural damage and severed electrical wires/gas lines.
