Warning

Event

According to a statement released by Nigerian health officials on Thursday, February 22, at least 31 cases of meningococcal meningitis, including four deaths, have been reported in Niger state in recent weeks. Authorities in the affected areas have reportedly implemented public health measures to contain the spread of the disease; however, additional cases will likely continue to be reported in the coming weeks.

Context

Meningitis is endemic to the "meningitis belt" of Africa's Sahel region, which stretches from Senegal to Ethiopia. It is an annual concern in Nigeria as periodic outbreaks occur during the dry season between October and April in the north. Symptoms include headache, fever, and stiffness of the neck.

Advice

Individuals present in Nigeria are advised to take necessary measures to protect themselves from the disease (e.g. wash hands and disinfect all surfaces frequently), avoid all contact with infected individuals, and make sure appropriate immunizations are up to date before traveling to the country. Those developing symptoms of meningitis should seek immediate medical attention.
