Singapore: Authorities warn of increased terrorist threat

Singaporean authorities have warned that a terrorist attack is highly likely in Singapore in 2018. Despite being second on The Economist Intelligence Unit’s Safe Cities Index in 2017, the city-state has been the target of militant plots for several years, most stemming from its Muslim-majority neighbors and some from radicalized citizens. Simulations of terrorist attacks have occurred on a regular basis in Singapore in recent months.

Context

Singaporean authorities have reportedly foiled bombings targeting several embassies since the September 11, 2001, attacks on the United States. Several arrests were made in 2016, including six suspected militants affiliated with the Islamic State (IS) in Indonesia accused of plotting an attack in Singapore, as well as six Bangladeshis accused of financing terrorism.
Many Westerners reside in Singapore, which raises fears that the city could be a prime target for militant groups.
