South Africa: ANC recalls President Zuma February 12 /update 1

Event

The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the African National Congress (ANC) reportedly decided to recall South African President Jacob Zuma following a meeting held through late on Monday, February 12 (local time). According to party officials, the NEC has given Zuma an ultimatum to resign within two days. If Zuma refuses to step down, he would then be expected to face a vote of confidence - in which he would be unlikely to politically survive - in parliament on Thursday, February 22. Zuma had previously rejected a request by ANC senior officials to resign a week ago.

Related demonstrations and a consequent heightened security presence and transportation disruptions are possible throughout South Africa, and especially in Pretoria, in the coming days. 

Context

Zuma's tenure as president officially runs until mid-2019. However, mounting public discontent surrounding Zuma, in power since 2009, has grown since scandals surrounding his presidency came to light. Additionally, prevailing corruption, inequality, unemployment, high crime rates, and poor handling of the current economic crisis, among other issues, have contributed to Zuma's current unpopularity.

Individuals throughout South Africa are advised to monitor the situation, avoid any demonstrations due to the risk of violence, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities.

On a separate note, individuals in the country - particularly in urban areas - are advised to be on guard against high levels of criminal activity and to maintain a low profile at all times. Be particularly vigilant after dusk and avoid traveling on foot after nightfall. Criminals may be armed; do not resist if confronted and do not look your attacker(s) directly in the eye. Drive with windows closed, doors locked, and all personal possessions hidden from sight.
