Context
Former President Jacob Zuma announced his immediate resignation from the presidency during a televised address on February 14.
Zuma's tenure as president was originally set to extend through mid-2019. However, public discontent surrounding Zuma, who had been in power since 2009, had grown as scandals surrounding his presidency came to light. Additionally, prevailing high levels of corruption, inequality, unemployment, crime, and a poor handling of the current economic crisis, among other issues, contributed to Zuma's current unpopularity.
