Colombia: Seasonal rains cause flooding in Medellín

Some parts of Colombia are starting to experience seasonal rains and associated flooding and landslides. On Monday, March 26, heavy rains caused flooding in the city of Medellín and the nearby town of Bello. According to local reports, over 100 homes were damaged and thousands were left without electricity. A landslide was reported in Medellín’s San Javier neighborhood, which destroyed a house. Authorities issued evacuation orders in parts of Bello.

Further flooding and landslides are likely throughout the country during the upcoming rainy season, which generally lasts from April through May.

Context

Flooding and landslides are common in Colombia during the rainy seasons, which typically occur in April-May and October-November. Generally speaking, the flood risk is highest along rivers and the landslide risk is highest in hilly or mountainous zones, particularly in poorer areas lacking proper building code standards.

It should also be noted an increase in transmission rates of mosquito- and water-borne diseases is typically observed during and immediately following the rainy season.

In the event of flooding, remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult - and that floodwater may contain wastewater or chemical products; all items having come into contact with the water should be disinfected and all foodstuffs discarded.
