Hostage situation in Super U supermarket in Trèbes (Aube department) Friday morning, March 23; avoid the area

A hostage situation is underway as of the early afternoon of Friday, March 23, in a supermarket in the southwestern town of Trèbes (Aude department). A gunman, reportedly also carrying grenades, opened fire on two police officers (injuring one) before taking refuge in the store - a Super U - around 11:15 (local time).

Security forces are on the scene and have cordoned of the area. More shots have been heard and the Trèbes mayor has announced that at least one hostage, an employee of the supermarket, has been killed. It is currently believed that the gunmen is the lone assailant and that he is confined within the building.

According to an official, the perpetrator has declared allegiance to the Islamic State (IS). The counter-terrorism authorities are involved in the investigation.

It remains unclear if the initial shooting occurring in Trèbes or in the nearby city of Carcassonne.
