Hostage situation in Trèbes (Aude department) Friday morning/afternoon, March 23; avoid the area
Event
The attack at the Super U supermarket in Trèbes (Aude department) continues as of 13:30 (local time) on Friday, March 23. According to police, two of the hostages - reportedly an employee and a client - have been killed and several others wounded; the death toll could rise as more information becomes available. The assailant remains inside the store. Some of the hostages have reportedly managed to leave the building; it is unclear how many remain inside, if any. Security forces are on the scene and have cordoned of the area.
The incident began around 11:00 when a gunman opened fire on police officers (injuring one) in Carcassonne before driving to Trèbes and taking refuge in the supermarket around 11:15.
According to an official, the perpetrator has declared allegiance to the Islamic State (IS) and the incident is being treated as a terrorist attack. The assailant is reportedly a Moroccan national known to the French authorities.
Security has been increased at Carcassonne Airport (CCF).
