India: Internet and rail services suspended in south Kashmir

Authorities imposed restrictions in parts of Srinagar city (summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir state) on Monday, March 5, in a bid to prevent separatist protests. The restrictions include the suspension of internet and rail services throughout southern Kashmir. Protests and a general strike had already been called for in the Kashmir Valley following recent violence involving security forces in Shopian district that left three dead over the weekend (March 3-4); a gunfight was provoked after unknown assailants fired upon an army vehicle. Shops and other businesses remain closed, and public transit suspended, in Srinagar as of Monday amid the strike.

Context

A three-decade long insurgency continues in parts of the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. Some sepratist groups support the complete independence of Kashmir, while others favor an annexation by neighboring Pakistan.
