Nigeria: Spiral meningitis outbreak in Katsina
Spiral meningitis outbreak in Katsina state (Nigeria); 22 cases (eight deaths) between January 17 and March 18
Event
Eight people in Katsina state’s Jibia local government area died from cerebral spinal meningitis over the weekend of March 17-18, as the seasonal disease returns to the country. Authorities are reportedly planning to begin a vaccination campaign in the region in response to this latest outbreak, which has produced at least 22 cases since January 17.
Context
Meningitis is endemic to the "meningitis belt" of Africa's Sahel region, which stretches from Senegal to Ethiopia. It is an annual concern in Nigeria as periodic outbreaks occur during the dry season between October and April in the north. Symptoms include headache, fever, and stiffness of the neck.
Advice
Individuals present in Nigeria are advised to take necessary measures to protect themselves from the disease (e.g. wash hands and disinfect all surfaces frequently), avoid all contact with infected individuals, and make sure appropriate immunizations are up to date before traveling to the country. Those developing symptoms of meningitis should seek immediate medical attention.
