Panama: Strike continues in Colón March 14 /update 1

Event

A general strike continued for a second day in Colón on Wednesday, March 14, disrupting public transportation and commerce after violent protests erupted in the city on Tuesday, March 13. At least five people have been wounded, including four police officers, and 45 people have been arrested in related protests and clashes between protesters and police officers since the strike began. Incidents of looting have also been reported in the city.

As of Wednesday morning (local time), public transportation remained suspended in Colón, where a traffic jam obstructed the flow of vehicles at the main entrance to the city. Notably, a related demonstration was held on 16th Street on Wednesday; additional protests, a heightened security presence, and further transportation and commercial disruptions are expected in Colón in the coming hours and days.

Context

The strike and protests have been called to demand that the government address issues related to education, gentrification, security, waste management, and the water supply. The committee behind the strike hopes to get President Juan Carlos Varela to visit Colón to discuss these issues.
