Peru: State of emergency in Puno and Huánuco March 29

On Thursday, March 29, Peruvian officials declared a 60-day state of emergency due to heavy rains in Sandia, Collini, Jacha Jaa (Puno region), and Ambo (Huánuco region). According to local sources, heavy rains in the regions have led to numerous landslides damaging multiple buildings and roads. Rains are likely to continue through the end of April, which could cause the already hazardous conditions to deteriorate further.

The prolonged rains may be associated with the La Niña climatic phenomenon. La Niña, a cooling of ocean surface temperatures, is characterized in Peru by increased rain in the interior of the country and a lack of rain in coastal areas.

Individuals in affected areas are advised to follow weather forecasts and adhere to any advice issued by the local authorities. In the event of flooding keep in mind that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock an adult over.
