South Africa: Violent protests in Hermanus (Western Cape) March 22-27

As of Tuesday, March 27, authorities had arrested at least 25 people in Hermanus, Western Cape, amid ongoing protests since Thursday, March 22. Approximately 200 people have participated in the protests, denouncing what they allege is the municipal government’s negligence of the poor. Demonstrators also occupied a vacant plot of land in the town until riot police responded to disperse them. Multiple municipal structures and private businesses have been looted and burned by protesters.

Further protests remain possible, despite a last-minute government pledge to provide land and eventual housing in the area to protesters.
