Costa Rica: National public sector strike April 25

National public sector strike in Costa Rica April 25; health, education, and transportation sectors may be significantly disrupted

Warning

Event

Public sector workers in Costa Rica will be on strike Wednesday, April 25, to denounce recent public finance reforms and austerity measures. All nonessential public services could be suspended throughout the 24-hour period, including in the education, health, and transportation sectors. Schools may be closed. Hospitals will likely remain open, but non-emergency cases may be turned away and scheduled doctor’s appointments canceled.

An associated demonstration will be held in the capital San José; protesters will gather at 10:00 (local time) and La Merced Park before marching to the National Assembly building.

Marches are also expected to take place throughout the country on May Day (May 1), with further strikes - lasting up to 72-hours - threatened for the month of May.

Advice

Individuals in Costa Rica are advised to confirm doctor’s appointments, anticipate longer waiting times in medical facilities, and avoid all protests as a precaution.
