Officials at the state-run electrical company Electricité du Liban (EDL) are calling for workers to launch an indefinite strike on Thursday, April 26. Workers are being asked to hold sit-ins at their offices and to not perform any repairs during the strike. An emergency meeting will also be held at 12:00 (local time) on Thursday between EDL officials to decide whether or not to continue the work stoppage. Associated demonstrations are possible in the coming days. Power disruptions are also possible in the event that network repairs are required while repair personnel remain on strike.

EDL workers are demanding that the government implement a new public sector wage agreement initially adopted in July 2017.

Advice

Individuals in Lebanon are advised to monitor the situation and prepare for possible power outages (keep battery-powered devices such as cellphones and laptops fully charged when possible).
