Police fire tear gas to disperse opposition demonstrators in Antananarivo April 21; at least one person killed

Hundreds of opposition supporters gathered in the capital of Antananarivo on Saturday, April 21, to denounce new electoral laws. Demonstrators rallied in the city center before police fired tear gas to disperse the crowd. According to hospital officials, as of 15:00 (local time) at least one person has been killed and another 16 injured during the protests.

Context

A related demonstration that took place in Toasmasina on April 14 was dispersed by security forces. On April 3, pro-government MPs passed three controversial electoral bills; opposition MPs boycotted the vote. The laws were approved on April 12 by the senate, following which opposition supporters took to the High Constitutional Court to call for the annulment of the laws.
