On Wednesday, April 18, Moroccan police announced the arrests of ten people in a large operation targeting drug traffickers in Nador province. Over 6 tons of hashish and 80 kg (176 lbs) of kif were reportedly seized in the operation, in addition to weapons and cars suspected of use in drug trafficking activities. Authorities have launched an investigation into the drug network to learn more about its international connections with other drug trafficking groups. Additional arrests and seizure of drugs and drug trafficking equipment are possible in Morocco, particularly in Nador province, in the near-term.

Context

According to the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), Morocco is among the world's largest producers and exporters of cannabis resin. Almost 50,000 hectares (123,552 acres) of land are used in the cultivation of cannabis in the country, most of which in the Rif region, though Moroccan authorities have recently cut down on the growth of the crop.
