Myanmar: Pollution concern in Yangon after garbage fire

Days-long garbage fire in Yangon under control as of April 25; pollution concerns amid high temperatures persist

A major fire that broke out in Hlaing Tharyar township, on the outskirts of Yangon, over the weekend has been brought under control as of Wednesday, April 25, according to firefighters, although some pockets of flames continue to burn. Myanmar Health Authorities have reportedly launched a 24-hour operation to check air quality in surrounding areas after dozens of individual reportedly suffered from respiratory problems; according to local reports, Hlaing Tharyar General Hospital has admitted approximately 60 patients due to smoke inhalation. The Hlaing Tharyar, North Okkalpan, Insein, Mayangone, Shwepyithar, and Dagon Myothit townships of Yangon are particularly impacted by poor air quality.

Individuals present in the Yangon area - particularly those with existing respiratory issues - are advised to minimize nonessential outdoor activity until conditions improve, to monitor the situation, and to seek medical attention if needed.
