According to health officials, at least 160 cholera cases, including 13 deaths, had been reported in 2018 in Yobe state as of Thursday, April 5. According to local sources, most cases are concentrated in and around the town of Gashua (Bade local government area). Officials announced that the outbreak was due to the consumption of water from contaminated shallow wells.

Context

Cholera is an infectious disease caused by Vibrio cholerae bacteria that can induce acute diarrhea and vomiting, and subsequent dehydration. The risk of death is greatest among people with low immunity, such as malnourished children or those living with HIV. However, even among healthy adults, cholera can be fatal within a matter of hours.
