Warning

Event

Armed men suspected of belonging to a gang involved in kidnapping and cattle rustling attacked a mining site in the Mahanga village of Kaduna state (northwest) on Saturday, April 28. According to police sources, at least ten people were killed and 12 others injured in the attack. An investigation is ongoing. Additional clashes are possible in the coming weeks.

Context

Kidnappers and cattle thieves are active in the area and belong to a wider network of criminal gangs that operate in Kaduna and neighboring Katsina and Zamfara states. In mid-April, suspected cattle thieves conducted a similar attack in Zamfara state, killing at least 26 people.

Advice

Individuals in Kaduna state are advised to remain vigilant and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities.

The security environment in Nigeria is complex and is particularly concerning in the northeast and extreme south of the country due to the presence of armed groups, high crime rates, and the risk of kidnapping. Some Western governments consequently advise against travel to certain areas of the northeast (e.g. states of Borno, Yobe, Gombe, Bauchi, and Jigawa as well as parts of Kano and Adamawa states) and the southern Niger Delta region (e.g. states of Delta, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, and Rivers). Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel to these areas.
