Nationwide teacher strikes on April 17-20 and 23-26 and demonstration on April 25; school closures, transportation disruptions, increased security expected

Warning

Event

The Teachers' Federation of Senegal (FEDER) has called for teachers nationwide to stage strikes on April 17-20 and April 23-26. According to a FEDER spokesperson, the strikes have been organized to demand better working conditions as well as to protest the heavy-handed response of security forces against a previous teacher demonstration in Ziguinchor on April 12. A demonstration is also scheduled to take place in Diourbel on Wednesday, April 25.

School closures should be expected on the abovementioned dates, and heightened security measures and transportation disruptions are likely near any gatherings. Confrontations between demonstrators and police are possible, and clashes cannot be ruled out.

Advice

Individuals in Senegal are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid all potential demonstrations and protests as a precaution, and heed all advice issued by the local authorities.
