Senegal: Nationwide electricity and internet disruptions occurring Sept. 12

Electricity and internet outages occurring across Senegal Sept. 12. Transport, business, telecommunications disruptions likely.

Critical

Widespread electricity and internet disruptions are occurring across Senegal as of late Sept. 12. According to utility provider SENELEC, the outages stem from a technical malfunction at the Hann substation. SENELEC technicians have deployed in an effort to restore power as soon as possible; however, company officials have given no estimate as to when the situation will be fully resolved.

Transport, business, and telecommunications disruptions will likely affect areas that are subject to the power outage. Malfunctioning traffic signals may disrupt the flow of traffic in some areas and lead to longer driving times. The electricity disruptions could also result in the temporary unavailability of essential services in affected areas, such as hospitals, ATMs, and gas stations. Additionally, power disruptions could adversely affect security protocols, including alarm systems and electronic fences; opportunistic criminal activity could increase during the blackout.

Charge mobile and essential electrical devices when possible and ensure backup batteries are available. Exercise caution when driving in areas that are experiencing electricity disruptions. Park vehicles in secure areas. Confirm business appointments. Verify that security systems are working. Ensure that generators are functional and refuel devices when necessary.
