Senegal: Increased security possible nationwide through late November following legislative election /update 1
Heightened security possible across Senegal through late November following Nov. 17 legislative election. Associated gatherings possible.
Heightened security is possible across Senegal through late November following the nation's legislative election held on Nov. 17. Though official reporting has yet to be released, reports indicate the country's ruling party, PASTEF, has won "a large victory" under Bassirou Diomaye Faye's presidential leadership. Following the election, former Senegalese President Macky Sall and former Prime Minister Amadou Ba conceded defeat. Unless delayed, official results are expected over the coming days.
Although the election occurred relatively peacefully, authorities will likely maintain an increased security posture, particularly in Dakar and major cities nationwide, out of an abundance of caution. Police could be quick to use force to disperse any disruptive gatherings that may materialize. Political-related gatherings remain possible following the official announcement of the election results, and post-election skirmishes remain possible.
Exercise vigilance while operating in Senegal, especially in Dakar, Ziguinchor, and other major cities nationwide. Avoid any demonstrations that may materialize. If clashes break out, leave the area immediately and take shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Heed the instructions of local authorities. Remain cooperative if approached and questioned by security personnel.
