Violent protests continue in Mahikeng (North West province) April 20; avoid all gatherings

Protests continued in the Mahikeng local municipality (North West province) overnight April 19-20 and into Friday morning to demand the resignation of Supra Mahumapelo, the provincial governor. Demonstrators have reportedly looted stores, particularly those owned by foreigners, and set fire to vehicles. Police responded by firing rubber bullets at protesters on Friday morning and reportedly threatened to shoot nearby journalists. Police have confirmed that 23 demonstrators have been arrested. President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected in the city on Friday morning to address the tensions.

On a related note, the Botswanan government announced on Thursday that border crossings in the Mahikeng area have been closed until further notice due to the protests.
