South Korea: 17,000 foreigners barred from the country over past year

South Korea prevented over 17,000 foreign nationals from entering the country from April 2017 to March 2018

Informational

Event

According to government, South Korea prevented more than 17,000 foreign nationals - out of a total of 42.33 million - from entering the country between April 2017 and March 2018. This was due to a passenger screening system put in place for South Korea-bound planes. All flights operated by the 86 airlines serving South Korea from 169 airports in 43 countries have implemented the screenings.

Context

The system went into effect on April 1, 2017. Passenger information is matched against international terrorist lists, stolen passport lists, and criminal records (for murder, sexual crimes, drug use, assaults, and other serious criminal offenses committed in South Korea), with the government immigration information system linked to airline reservation and ticketing systems.

Advice

As a reminder, foreign nationals wishing to enter South Korea must possess a passport valid for a minimum period of three months from the date of entry into the country. Many foreign nationals can enter South Korea as a tourist for up to 90 days without a visa if in possession of an onward or return ticket. In case of doubt, check visa requirements with the nearest South Korean embassy or consulate.
