Uruguay: Storm alerts issued for much of the country April 12
Orange and yellow storm alerts issued for southern and central Uruguay April 12; heavy rain, violent winds, and hail forecast

The Uruguayan meteorological institute INUMET has issued orange alerts - the second highest level - for the much of the central and southern areas of the country due to storms forecast to hit on Thursday, April 12. The alerts are currently - as of 05:20 (local time) - in place for the departments of Flores, Florida, Lavalleja, and Maldonado, as well as parts of Canelones, Durazno, Paysandú, Río Negro, Rocha, Salto, Soriano, and Tacuarembó. Thunderstorms, torrential rain, hail, and strong winds are forecast. Associated flooding, power outages, and transportation disruptions cannot be ruled out.
Lower yellow alerts are also in place in the southwest of the country, including the capital Montevideo.

Flooding is relatively common in Uruguay and can occur year round.
