Uruguay: Storm alerts issued for north, east April 23

Orange and yellow storm alerts issued for northern and eastern Uruguay April 23; heavy rain, violent winds, and hail forecast

The Uruguayan meteorological institute INUMET has issued orange alerts - the second highest level - for the north and east of the country due to storms forecast to hit on Monday, April 23. The alerts are currently - as of 05:30 (local time) - in place for the department of Rivera, as well as parts of the following departments: Artigas, Cerro Largo, Salto, and Tacuarembó. Thunderstorms, torrential rain, hail, and strong winds are expected. Associated flooding, power outages, and transportation disruptions cannot be ruled out.

Lower yellow alerts are also in place in other areas, including in the departments of Durazno, Florida, and Treinta y Tres.   

Context

Flooding is relatively common in Uruguay and can occur year round.

Individuals in affected areas are advised to maintain a safe distance from river banks, to keep abreast of the situation via local media outlets, and to adhere to any instructions issued by the local authorities.
