Mexico: Teacher protest in Mexico City June 4

The National Coordination of Education Workers (CNTE) teachers' union is planning to hold a demonstration in Mexico City on Monday, June 4. Demonstrators are expected to gather around the Ministry of the Interior. According to a CNTE spokesperson, at least 10,000 teachers are expected to partake in the demonstration. Heightened security measures and transportation disruptions are expected in the vicinity of any gatherings.

Teachers have held numerous strikes and protests in Mexico in recent years amid major reforms to the education sector implemented by the government of President Enrique Peña Nieto. Past strikes in the south of the country have lasted for weeks (even months), involving deadly protests and blockades which have led to shortages of consumer goods.
