Pakistan: Deadly heatwave ongoing in south as of May 22
Heatwave leaves at least 65 people dead in Karachi (Sindh province) as of May 22; Bolochistan and Punjab provinces also impacted
Event
An ongoing heatwave has left at least 65 people dead in Karachi (Sindh province; south) as of Tuesday, May 22. The deaths were mainly reported in the Korangi and Landhi neighborhoods. The heatwave - with temperatures reaching 44°C (111°F) - comes amid the holy month of Ramadan, during which time Muslims are expected to forego food and water during daylight hours, making it particularly dangerous. Associated power outages have been reported in the province. Further business closures and power outages are expected throughout the duration of the heatwave, currently forecast to continue into the coming days.
Baluchistan and Punjab provinces have also been impacted by high temperatures.
Context
Periodic power outages generally exacerbate extreme summer heat in Pakistan, including in Sindh province. In particular, Karachi has been affected by extremely high summer temperatures in recent years. In 2015, a heatwave in Karachi left at least one thousand people dead.
Advice
Individuals present in Sindh province, particularly in Karachi, as well as Baluchistan and Punjab provinces are advised to monitor local weather reports, stay hydrated (drink at least 1.5 liters of water per day; however, it is advised to avoid drinking in public during Ramadan), and avoid spending time in direct sunlight during the hottest part of the day (generally from 12:00 to 16:00). Be especially on guard against symptoms of dehydration or heat stroke in vulnerable populations such as young children and seniors. Do not hesitate to contact emergency services if necessary.
