Heatwave alert issued for Sindh province May 29-31

Pakistani meteorological authorities have issued a three-day heatwave warning for Sindh province, including the city of Karachi, from Tuesday, May 29, through Thursday, May 31. Temperatures up to 48°C (118°F) are expected in some parts of the province. This heatwave comes amid the holy month of Ramadan, during which time Muslims are expected to forego food and water during daylight hours, making it particularly dangerous. Business closures and power outages are expected throughout the duration of the heatwave, which could continue after the three-day period.

Context

Karachi has been affected by extremely high summer temperatures in recent years. In 2015, a heatwave in the city left more than 1000 dead. More recently, Sindh province has already faced two periods of similar high temperatures, on May 3-4 and May 22-25, which resulted in dozens of deaths.

Advice

Individuals present in Sindh province, particularly in Karachi, are advised to monitor local weather reports, stay hydrated (drink at least 1.5 liters [0.4 gallons] of water per day; however, it is advised to avoid drinking in public during Ramadan. Avoid spending time in direct sunlight during the hottest part of the day (generally from 12:00 to 16:00). Be especially on guard against symptoms of dehydration or heat stroke in vulnerable populations such as young children and seniors. Do not hesitate to contact emergency services if necessary.
